Nakai-san is a man who knows exactly what he wants to do with a car when he is customizing it for his customers. Many say that customizing a car is not so much a work of engineering but a work of art. The true designer knows, just like a true artist, what he exactly wants when all is set and done. It is like a sculptor who sees a sculpture in the rock even before using the chisel and a painter visualizing the final image even before the brush touching the plain canvas. It is about amalgamation of art and engineering and nothing exemplifies this better than tuning the car.
Rauh Welt is the place to go to in Japan if you want your car customized and Nakai-san is the man Japan turns to for the job. But unlike many people across the planet the Japanese leave the work to the master rather than poke their nose in-between with meaningless ideas. RWB, the workshop of Nakai-san, is the place where customers mostly bring out their Porsche 911’s and just hand them over to the master craftsman to do his thing. They only tell him what they want- a street car with style or a race car with performance. Nakai does the rest.
We have two interesting works of Nakai-san today and both of them tell you how skilled the man is and why he is revered the way he is. The first one is a 1985 930 model and its striking color and amazing style hold you instantly. The customer apparently wanted a sizzling hot ‘red car’ but Nakai just thought that this cool green shade would be better and so he went about without ever informing the customer. The final product though was to the owner’s liking as he just wanted a docile street car with lots of style. That is the way the Japanese allow Nakai-san to work- leaving the genius to his own devices. (If it was in US, you could expect a huge legal grapple)
The second car in yellow is a custom crafted race car with all the features built for taking the track. The 3.6 liter engine along with the cockpit styled interiors makes it ideal for the track. Just enjoy the pics and Nakai-san’s work as he is one true master of his chosen craft and works with all the freedom in the world.
